Create a reading corner

A great way to stimulate reading at home is by creating a special place for reading in your child’s room. All you need is to prepare a place where your child feels motivated to read.

This corner should be  attractive, have good lighting and offer a variety of stories and books. You need to make sure your child has easy access to the books themselves and that they are appropriate for his or her age. It will encourage your child to enjoy the ability to read and all that it involves.

Establish a habit of reading before bedtime

Reading before bedtime is beneficial for children at different levels, from the time they are very young. First of all, it makes them get used to setting aside time for reading on a daily basis.

From the time babies are between four and six months old, parents can start reading books to them. As they listen, they look at the drawings and colors in these books. But, little by little, they will begin to acquire the ability to understand the stories, and,  when you least expect it, they will begin to read on their own.

In this way, we introduce reading to our children and help them develop this skill, which is fundamental to creating small readers who will grow up and appreciate its importance.

Become a member of a local library

Another great way to stimulate reading at home is to  take your child to the local library and become a member. With a library card, your child can choose from endless titles to suit his or her tastes and interests. Your child can spend time reading at the library or checking out books that he or she can relax with at home. It is also a great way to teach children about responsibility.

Be a positive example

In order for children to develop a good habit of reading, it is important that parents also read at home. You must not forget that we, as parents, are our children’s biggest role models, and they follow our example. Therefore,  it is crucial that the little ones observe their parents make their own leisure reading. It can include novels, magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc.

The importance of stimulating reading at home

Families should place great emphasis on reading and  offer their children numerous opportunities to stimulate and develop this skill. This is because, as we have mentioned, by mastering the skill of reading, it will be possible for us to learn constantly over the course of our lives.

Furthermore, a habit of reading on a regular basis will also:

  • Improve oral and written expressions.
  • Expand vocabulary.
  • Improve written language and spelling knowledge.
  • Stimulate creativity and imagination.
  • Help prevent the onset of learning disabilities.
  • Maximize concentration and attention.
  • Increase critical and reflexive thinking.
