Mother marks are small marks that can vary in color and they usually have a circular or oval shape. Scientifically known as the nevus, they can exist on any part of the body. At the same time, they can occur anywhere between the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue.

What are birthmarks?

As we mentioned above, birthmarks are actually benign tumors. In other words,  it is changes in the tissue that lead to the growth of nodules and changes in the color of the skin.

Everyone can have birthmarks, even those with the darkest skin. However, it is true that those who have lighter skin have the highest rate of birthmarks on their skin.

On average,  an adult has about 20 birthmarks. Children have about half of this number. The amount of birthmarks a child has can be increased or decreased over time.

The primary characteristics of birthmarks in children

One of the primary characteristics of birthmarks is that they are asymptomatic. In other words, they should not itch, burn or leak liquid.

The other characteristic they have in common is their color. In general, they are brown, although the exact tone and darkness may vary. In a small number of cases, they may be reddish in color (known as blood hemangiomas) or even blue.

According to their shape, they have the most to be circular or oval. They can be flat, in a single tone and very small (about 5 millimeters). At the same time, they can be large (8-10 millimeters), uneven and swollen.

What is a melanoma?

This section is extremely important. The term “melanoma” often comes up when talking about birthmarks in children and adults. Melanoma refers to skin cancer, which is one of the most common diseases worldwide.

The coupling to birthmarks is due to the fact that,  to the eye, they look, practically, similar in the early stages. However, later, they may stand out because their shape and color become asymmetrical. However, this generally does not occur in the case of healthy birthmarks.

Is there a way to prevent the appearance of birthmarks in children?

It is clear, depending on the skin type, that some children are more likely to have and develop new birthmarks. However, other factors also play a role.

For example, experts believe that  frequent and prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to the appearance of birthmarks.

In this case,  we should protect our children from sun exposure, especially in the hours between 11 and 15.  You must make sure that you always apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

These reservations reduce the possibility of the appearance or growth of birthmarks in children by 5%. It will also prevent the appearance of freckles on the skin.

What types of birthmarks can be removed?

As we have mentioned above, benign tumors are asymptomatic. They do not present physical discomfort in and of themselves.

However, there are some people who feel that birthmarks are an aesthetic problem – that they are unpleasant to the eyes. For that reason, they may ask a dermatologist to remove a birthmark.

When it comes to birthmarks in children,  it is best not to touch them at all. If they irritate your child, itch, hurt or are red, you should see your pediatrician or pediatrician. A medical professional will be able to determine the appropriate treatment in your child’s particular case.

Now that you know more about the characteristics of birthmarks, you can pay more attention to their appearance in children.
