There is no magic solution when it comes to stopping your baby’s crying. However, there are different, approved pediatrician and parenting methods, techniques, and habits that you can try.
The arrival of a new member of the family brings great joy. When you hear the little cry, it is normal that you want to pick her up and comfort her right away. However, you may want to hear comments, such as “let her cry”, from friends and family.

Remember that your child is completely dependent on you, to meet her needs. When your baby cries, she tells you she needs you.

Reasons why your baby is crying

As parents, especially first-time parents, we need to tackle a major task: learning to understand our children’s signals. There are many reasons why your baby starts crying:

  • Hunger:  The most common motive, and perhaps the easiest to solve – just give the little one a chance to be breastfed, or prepare a bottle.
  • Air:  The gases that your baby’s tummy can create can cause him or her to cry frequently.
  • Dirty diaper:  Discomfort, due to a wet or dirty diaper, can make your baby sad, and tears are a way she tells you she wants your attention.
  • Fatigue:  Sometimes babies have a hard time falling asleep even though they are tired. As a result, they become irritable.
  • A desire to be kept:  It is normal – and healthy – for babies to seek attention and physical contact, and to cry to get it.
  • Temperature changes Your baby will express your discomfort at these changes by crying.
  • Health:  If your baby is not feeling well, it may be due to fever, caused by a virus or bacterial infection. If so, the cry may be different than usual, so you will need to know how to recognize it when it happens.

What to do if your baby cries

The list above details the typical reasons why a baby cries. However, keep in mind that sometimes babies cry for no apparent reason.

Similarly, a mother can learn to comfort her child. Most of the time, you just have to obey your maternal instinct.

Here is a list of some basic tips that every mother should know to comfort her crying baby:

  • Rocking:  Without a doubt, there is nowhere your baby would rather be than in your arms. Just feeling your touch and the scent of your skin will give your baby a sense of security.
  • Walk or bike a walk:  Whether it is around the house, or a walk in the area,  the feeling of movement, and the visual experience, will calm your baby. Sometimes your baby needs more entertainment so you can give it a try to go for a walk. Be careful though – while this is a very effective method, it can also become a bad habit.
  • Massage:  Your loving hands, and a bit of moisturizer, are  the perfect antidote to your baby’s crying.
  • A change of arms:  Believe it or not, your baby likes to experiment. While your arms will always be her favorite, it is normal for babies to want to try new experiences. Spending time in the arms of others can be the trick you need.
  • Your heartbeat. To help with your baby’s crying, you can lay her on your chest and lie back  so she can feel your heartbeat. This position will allow your baby to feel your warmth and protection. Furthermore, it will remind her of the time in your womb, which will reassure her.
  • Care:  Breastfeeding is a flawless, natural resource. By breastfeeding your baby,  she will feel totally connected to you,  and enjoy seeing you up close. While you can immerse yourself in each other’s eyes, your relationship will become stronger.
