When to add eggs to your children's diet

Eggs can be a great source of protein in your children’s diets. It is important to know the right age at which you can add eggs to your children’s diet. You also want to make sure they are eating the recommended daily amount.

Eggs can not be missing in children’s diets. However, you need to know when and how to add them to your children’s diets so that they can adapt properly.

Eggs are rich in nutrients and they provide an exceptional contribution during the first few years of life. But, when can you start adding eggs to your children’s diets, and can you serve them in any form? No, but there are plenty of options to choose from. We will explain more, below.

Characteristics of eggs

Eggs have three parts: the shell, the egg yolk and the egg white. Together, the egg yolk and egg white contain a high index of essential amino acids, fatty acids and other essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. In other words, the  nutrients are well distributed between the white and the yolk.

Egg whites consist of 88% water and proteins. Among these, ovalbumin stands out. Therefore, we recommend that one eats only the egg whites in certain diets. The egg yolks are rich in fats, mineral salts and proteins rich in phosphates.

Benefits of adding eggs to children’s diets

  • Eggs contain all the nutrients needed for children to grow big and strong.
  • Eggs contribute energy, due to their high protein content.
  • Due to their soft texture, they are easy to chew and digest.
  • Eggs naturally supply the body with vitamin D.
  • The egg yolk contains monounsaturated fatty acids. This means that they are not harmful to the body.

Thanks to these and other benefits, it is important to add eggs to your children’s diet. Of course, the amount depends on the age of your children.

You need to make sure that you introduce eggs into their diet gradually. Start at 6 months. We recommend that you start with the egg yolk, preferably well-cooked and without salt.

From 10 months onwards, you can give your children scrambled eggs or omelets. You need to make sure that you do not add any spices. Do not give your children fried eggs until they are more than 2 years old.

According to how many eggs you can give your children, be careful not to give them too many. In other words,  you can give them half an egg when they are 6 months old, and then a whole egg. It is not a good idea to give your children more eggs than their weight allows.
